This time last year, I was a month away from submitting the manuscript for 'Big Little Steps' to my editor, when I had the opportunity to attend the Dubai Modest Fashion Week - held for the first time in Dubai, UAE.
Among the line-up of women were a few personal inspirations of mine - including Melanie ElTurk, CEO and founder of Haute Hijab and the first hijab-ever hijab wearing models Mariah Idrissi and Halima Aden.
I wanted to meet Halima because I mention her in the book: she had recently made her runway debut at Yeezy Season 5, was featured in Rihanna's TVC for the launch of Fenty Beauty and graced the cover of Vogue Arabia, to name a few (all within a span of 6 months!).
My talented illustrator Hatty Pedder had drawn her Vogue Arabia front cover and it meant a lot to me to show it to Halima in person - she was such a sweetheart and loved it! She graciously posed with it as dozens of photographers jumped on the opportunity to take a good shot of her backstage.
Halima Aden is an inspiration to many women and girls around the world, and for a good reason.. watch her TedX speech and enjoy!
